Amphibians

We know there are frogs up here— we've heard them. But the salamanders are easier to get pictures of!

California Newt
Taricha torosa


These little guys are pretty common, at least during the rainy season. They move along at a good clip, especially considering it's often cold. (I thought cold-blooded animals were supposed to be slooowwww when cold.) Be sure to watch out for them when you're driving the road

Pacific or California Giant Salamander
Dicamptodon ensatus


This is the first one of these we've seen. Much slicker than the salamander above, he (she?) was also a bit larger and much darker. When picked up off the road, he (she?) made a chittering, churring sound.
